Firsthand tips for a smoother cruise vacation—from arriving early to boarding day and beyond.

Graff Getaways recently took a long-weekend cruise from Galveston, Texas. Because this was our first time sailing from Galveston, we wanted to share our experience and a few helpful things we learned along the way.

We had a wonderful time, and our vacation got off to a less stressful start because of a little advance planning. These simple, firsthand tips can help make your own Galveston cruise experience go more smoothly.

           1. Arrive in Galveston Early

We chose to arrive in Galveston the day before our cruise. We flew into William P. Hobby Airport in Houston and had prebooked an Uber to take us to Galveston that evening. Our drive took approximately 45–50 minutes.

We stayed at the Tru by Hilton and arrived close to 9:00 p.m. Check-in was quick and easy, and afterward, we walked next door to Papa’s Pizza for a late dinner.

Arriving at least one day before your cruise helps reduce travel stress and gives you some valuable breathing room in case you encounter flight delays or other unexpected issues along the way.

           2. Plan Your Transportation to the Port

After spending the night in Galveston, we had a prebooked Uber pick us up at approximately 9:00 a.m. Our hotel was close to the cruise port, so the drive to the terminal took only about 15–20 minutes. Our driver dropped us off directly in front of the terminal, making the process very convenient.

We had purchased Royal Caribbean’s The Key service, so we chose to keep our luggage with us instead of leaving it with the porters. Once onboard, The Key allowed us to drop off all the luggage we had carried onto the ship—including our carry-ons—at the designated dining room. Our bags were then delivered to our stateroom, allowing us to begin exploring the ship without carrying everything around.

After checking in, we were escorted into the terminal and waited only about 5–10 minutes before being taken through security.

By 9:55 a.m., we were seated inside the terminal waiting for boarding to begin. It wasn’t long before our group was called and we started making our way onto the ship.

           3. Know What to Expect on Embarkation Day

Before embarkation morning, we completed our online check-in and watched the required safety videos in the Royal Caribbean app. We also completed the health questionnaire when it became available the day before our cruise.

Once all our information was entered and approved, our boarding passes turned purple to indicate expedited check-in. This helped make our experience at the terminal quick and efficient. We kept our passports and boarding passes readily available so the terminal staff could review everything before directing us toward the ship.

We always pack a change of clothes, swimsuits, prescription medications, sunglasses, electronics, chargers, and important travel documents in our carry-ons. We also try to keep those bags as light as possible because, without a luggage-drop benefit such as The Key, you may need to carry them until your stateroom becomes available.

           4. Make the Most of a Short Cruise

We sailed aboard Mariner of the Seas, a Voyager Class ship with 15 decks and a double-occupancy capacity of 3,114 passengers. We stayed in an inside cabin on Deck 9.

Even on a short cruise, the ship offered plenty of entertainment and activities. We attended three great shows in the Royal Theater, including a comedy show, and had a lot of fun at the ice-skating show in Studio B. We also spent time in the casino and Schooner Bar, while the pub offered live entertainment late into the night.

We enjoyed our meals in the main dining room and treated ourselves to dinner at Jamie’s Italian. We had a wonderful meal featuring homemade pasta and bread. If you haven’t reserved specialty dining in advance, check for availability and special offers as soon as you board. On our cruise, Jamie’s Italian offered a great first-day deal.

Because of our Diamond status with Royal Caribbean, we enjoyed breakfast and happy hour in the Crown Lounge. Located near the top of the ship, it offered wonderful views while we ate and relaxed.

Mariner of the Seas felt easy to navigate and did not require as much advance planning as some of Royal Caribbean’s larger ships. The most important arrangements to make ahead of time are your dining reservations—even if you select My Time Dining—and any specialty restaurants you especially want to experience.

           Cozumel, Mexico

Our cruise included one port stop in Cozumel. On our last few visits, we docked at International Pier, where we enjoyed nearby shops, restaurants, and one of our favorite stops—Margaritaville. On this sailing, however, we docked at the Punta Langosta Pier. Although there were some shops in the immediate port area, we found fewer things to do without taking a taxi. This is a good reminder to check which Cozumel pier your ship is expected to use and plan transportation or an excursion accordingly.

           5. My Best Galveston Cruise Tips

Arrive in Galveston at least one day before your cruise.

Keep your passport, boarding pass, and other cruise documents in your personal bag.

Attach your cruise-line luggage tags before arriving at the terminal.

Pack medications, valuables, electronics, and first-day necessities in your carry-on.

Complete online check-in as soon as it becomes available.

           Ready to Cruise From Galveston?
